Summer!!

Thu May 7, 2009, 11:52 AM
Well, technically it is still spring, but the sun is shining, school is out and the weather is warming.

Soon I will be posting more photos, sculptures first and then a batch of drawings. The drawings will need to wait until I have relocated, as I am moving in a week or so. So look the first batch in a couple of days, and then some more in another week or two.

It is too nice outside to sit at the computer, so I am off on a bike-ride.

Ta!

Hi Kathy.

I don't really use chat much, I just don't have the time.

Sorry.

Well, I moved here from Portland, OR, and the weather adjustment was not huge, but it did happen. Unless you are into snow sports, the winter can become a bit long. Last summer was "unseasonably cool" or so I was told. Rather overcast and chilly. This year is shaping up to be beautiful, though temps right now are in the 50s and 60s.

Summers are great for exploring-hiking, biking, walking, camping. There is a pretty good system of trails through the parks in the city that let you get from one end to another without leaving the trees. Short drives away are many wonderful, amazing sights, and longer drives offer more amazement.

Anchorage is the largest city in AK, and offers the most "culture." Because of that, it is also looked down on by other Alaskans as being too "lower-48," but it is very different, too. In my way of thinking, it's a great transition point for Alaskan immigrants and visitors. Enough like the lower 48 to be familiar, and different enough to be unique.

There is definitely an art community if you look for it, but like everything else up here, it is not as large or active as in the lower 48. Summers tend to be devoted to tourists in general, but First Friday (of each month) is a city-wide event when all the galleries open their doors and the public makes the rounds of all the new shows. UAA is pretty good as an art school, though some disciplines are taught by only one teacher - one for painting, one for sculpture, etc. If you don't hit it off with that teacher, you're sol.

Thank you for being so indulgent about all of my questions! I'll owe you a beer once I get up there!

May I ask what made you decide on Alaska? Coincidentally, Oregon is one of my top picks for grad school. It's so *beautiful*! I can't imagine leaving.

As far as "culture" goes, being a bit of an introvert means that I don't much care for clubs and the like. Still, being able to go have a beer in something other than an Applebee's would be nice. I do enjoy the company of weird folks, so it'd be nice to meet some of those.

That's so funny about the First Friday thing! Louisville does that too! Though I admit it seems like it is only attended by old ladies, high school kids on their first dates, and yuppies, so I haven't ever gone.

I am really looking forward to the different-ness that AK is said to have over the rest of the U.S. I love my hometown, but I have never really seen anything else. I mean, family vacations and all that, but never out of the country and never anywhere too different.

I work at an awesome family-owned art store down here. The owners just so happened to be friends with the owner of Blaine's in Anchorage, so I have a good lead on a job once I arrive! Some of our customers have been very encouraging about Alaska...they assure me that there will be no shortage of bizarre, friendly people.

Still, I worry about the higher cost of living up there. To give you an idea, my 1/3 of the rent down here is $225 for a large 3br apt near the University. I will be moving up with one of my current roomies, though, so hopefully that will help. Rather, I am following her up. She is the one who got an internship with the ecology dept at UAA... I just asked if she wanted company.

I will be leaving my car behind, but I have heard good things about the public transport up there. Is it true that you can get by pretty well just using a combination of buses, trains and bikes?

If it'd be okay with you, maybe we could correspond through e-mail after this? It feels weird to have personal info so visible to people I am not talking to. My e-mail is samanthadeitz *at* msn *dot* com.
